Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) is extending its long standing partnership with Innovent Biologics (IVBIY), teaming up again to develop new drugs aimed at cancer and immune related diseases.
Innovent said Sunday the agreement marks the seventh collaboration between the two companies and builds on a relationship that's already more than a decade old. Under the deal, Innovent will handle early research and clinical work in China, advancing selected programs through proof of concept studies. Lilly will then take over development and commercialization outside Greater China, while Innovent keeps rights in the region.

The setup plays to each company's strengths. Innovent brings antibody discovery and on the ground clinical execution, while Lilly handles later stage development and global launches. Financially, Innovent will receive $350 million upfront and could earn up to about $8.5 billion in additional milestone payments, plus tiered royalties on sales outside Greater China if products make it to market.
