Uber to Invest $100M in Autonomous Vehicle Charging Network

Uber Technologies Inc (UBER, Financials) said it will invest more than $100 million to build out charging infrastructure for autonomous vehicles, reinforcing its push to scale robotaxi operations.

DC fast charging stations at Uber's autonomous depots, where fleet operations are monitored, and charging pit stops in key cities will be funded by the investment. First phase launches in Bay Area, LA, and Dallas before spreading to additional markets.

Uber is also signing worldwide usage assurance agreements with charging operators. It partners with EVgo Inc. (EVGO) in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston. Electra in Paris and Madrid and Ionity in London collaborate in Europe.

Uber partners with over 20 firms to boost its autonomous car plan. It operates robotaxis in four U.S. cities and Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh.

Uber partners with Waymo and WeRide to run autonomous vehicles. As Tesla Inc. competes, the charging expansion ensures stable infrastructure.

The investment shows Uber's desire to expand its position in the self-driving mobility sector and overcome a fundamental operational bottleneck: reliable, high-speed charging.
