Wall Street’s major market averages shifted lower on Thursday as investors digested Walmart’s (WMT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/WMT]) latest earnings print and additional economic data.
The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite (COMP:IND [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/COMP:IND]) was last -0.6%. At the same time, the benchmark S&P 500 (SP500 [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SP500]) was -0.6%, and the blue-chip Dow (DJI [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/DJI]) was -0.8%.
From a sector vantage point, four of the S&P 500’s 11 segments were in positive trading territory, with utilities leading the way. At the other end, financials have suffered the most.
Treasury yields ticked down as the shorter-end U.S. 2-year Treasury yield (US2Y [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/US2Y]) moved lower by 1 basis point to 3.45%, and the longer-end U.S. 10-year Treasury yield (US10Y [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/US10Y]) moved down by 1 basis point to 4.06%.
On the economic front, the Philly Fed Manufacturing Index [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4553919-philly-fed-manufacturing-index-rises-in-febuary] rose in February. The U.S. trade deficit [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4553925-us-trade-deficit-swells-more-than-expected-in-december] swelled more than expected in December, and the initial jobless claims [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4553927-initial-jobless-claims-fall-more-than-expected-in-past-week] fell more than expected in the past week.
Federal Reserve speakers, including Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman, Minneapolis Fed Bank President Neel Kashkari, and Chicago Fed Bank President Austan Goolsbee, will speak at different events.
As for stocks that were on the move, shares of Deere & Company (DE [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/DE]) climbed 12.9%, and shares of EPAM Systems (EPAM [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/EPAM]) came down by 20.9%.
