Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) overtook Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) to become the world's largest company by revenue, marking a shift from traditional retail to digital commerce and cloud services.

The e-commerce giant posted 2025 sales of $717 billion, edging past Walmart's $713.2 billion for the year ending Jan. 31. Amazon's growth has far outpaced Walmart over the past decade, driven by online shopping and its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division.

Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, Amazon started as an online bookseller. It adopted several strategies from Walmart founder Sam Walton, adapting them to the digital era.

In the U.S., both companies continue to compete for shoppers. Amazon remains the largest online retailer, attracting billions of monthly visits, while Walmart operates more than 10,000 stores worldwide and leads in physical retail.

Amazon's revenue lead owes much to AWS, a sector Walmart does not operate in. Excluding cloud sales, Amazon's revenue would fall to $588 billion, below Walmart. Experts note the milestone is symbolic, reflecting diversification into technology rather than traditional retail dominance.

Bezos holds an estimated fortune of $228 billion, mostly tied to Amazon shares, ranking fourth on global wealth lists.
