After previously committing to as much as $1.4T in infrastructure spending, OpenAI (OPENAI [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/OPENAI]) is now looking for about $600B in total computing spend by 2030, CNBC reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
In October, Sam Altman, CEO of Microsoft (MSFT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSFT])-backed OpenAI (OPENAI [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/OPENAI]), said that his company has committed to about $1.4T in spending on infrastructure.
However, according to sources, the AI startup is now touting investors a lower number and a defined timeline for its spending plans amid concerns [https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/20/openai-resets-spend-expectations-targets-around-600-billion-by-2030.html] that the growth prospects were too excessive given potential revenue.
According to OpenAI's (OPENAI [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/OPENAI]) new spending plan, which is more directly tied to its estimated revenue growth, the company projects more than $280B of total revenue in 2030, with roughly equal contributions expected from its consumer and enterprise businesses.
The company is also finalizing an over $100B funding round with about 90% of investments expected from strategic investors, including Nvidia (NVDA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NVDA]), SoftBank (SFTBY [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SFTBY]) (SFTBF [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SFTBF]) (SOBKY [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SOBKY]), and Amazon (AMZN [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AMZN]), one person said.
The ChatGPT maker added $13.1B in revenue last year compared to its $10B target, and its cost base reached $8B, missing the $9B projection, the sources said.
After a slowdown in growth in the fall, ChatGPT has returned to record highs in weekly active and daily active users. The AI chatbot now caters to over 900M weekly active users, up from 800M as of October. OpenAI’s coding product, Codex, which competes with Anthropic’s Claude Cod, has surpassed 1.5M weekly active users, according to the sources.
