US-based Qualcomm Technologies and India’s Tata Electronics have agreed to manufacture Qualcomm Automotive Modules at Tata’s upcoming semiconductor assembly and test facility in India.
Through the arrangement, Tata Electronics will become part of Qualcomm Technologies’ global network of module manufacturing partners, supporting demand for modular automotive platforms.
Production of Qualcomm Automotive Module products in India is planned at Tata Electronics’ greenfield outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Assam.
According to the press statement, the move aligns with the government’s “Make in India” programme and broader efforts to diversify semiconductor supply chains.
Qualcomm Technologies automotive, industrial and embedded IoT, and robotics executive vice president and group general manager Nakul Duggal said: “Our work with Tata Electronics marks an important milestone in our automotive growth strategy. As the industry accelerates its shift toward integrated, module-based architectures, expanding manufacturing capacity in key regions becomes essential.”
Qualcomm Automotive Modules integrate Snapdragon Digital Chassis system-on-chips with essential system components into ready-to-deploy units.
These are designed for applications including digital cockpits, infotainment, connectivity and intelligent vehicle functions.
The companies said local manufacturing is intended to serve both Indian and overseas automakers while enhancing supply-chain resilience and geographic diversification.
Tata Electronics stated that its Jagiroad plant - described as India’s “first” indigenous OSAT facility - is being developed with an investment of $3bn.
The site will focus on wire bond, flip-chip and integrated systems packaging technologies for automotive, communications, IoT and AI applications.
The collaboration is aimed at enabling domestic production of automotive electronics platforms for local and export markets as the sector moves towards software-defined vehicles.
Tata Electronics CEO & MD Randhir Thakur added: “This collaboration supports Tata Electronics’ objective to become a global hub for high-technology manufacturing as a trusted partner to our leading semiconductor and automotive customers worldwide.”
Separately, Qualcomm Technologies last month announced a letter of intent (LOI) with Volkswagen Group for a long-term supply arrangement covering advanced infotainment and connectivity features powered by Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions.
Under the proposed agreement, Qualcomm Technologies would act as Volkswagen Group’s primary technology provider for the rollout of its zonal software-defined vehicle architecture - developed for the western hemisphere via Volkswagen Group’s joint venture with Rivian Automotive.
